About SchoolShooting.org
What?
SchoolShooting.org is an information resource on school shooting incidents taking place in the U.S. since 1992. The incidents included in our database are limited to incidents taking place either on school grounds or in the immediate vicinity in a manner that school students are significantly affected (e.g. at the bus stop next to the school). Furthermore, our database is limited to actual shootings, and it does not include threats or other gun-related incidents that did not result in an actual shooting.
Our foundational database was contributed by the National School Safety Center, but it has subsequently been enhanced. As our database grows and is further enhanced, we hope to provide additional statistics to the public about school shootings, such as the average age of victims/attackers or the type of school (e.g. K-12 vs. college).
Why?
SchoolShooting.org launched on April 20, 2009 to commemorate the victims of the Columbine shooting. Although certain shootings, such as the Columbine and Virginia Tech tragedies, have received significant ongoing media coverage, there are hundreds of other shootings taking place in our schools at the local level. Given that there was no authoritative information resource on these incidents, we thought that we would fill a void with SchoolShooting.org. We hope first and foremost that this website will serve as a useful information resource to the public. Various organizations are welcome to refer to this data for whatever purpose they see fit.
Although it is not the primary purpose of SchoolShooting.org, we do also hope that the information on this website will ultimately translate into common-sense action to keep firearms out of the hands of children and students. We are not opposed to the right of Americans to buy firearms, as long as reasonable steps are taken to keep the firearms out of the hands of children and those with backgrounds that would indicate a threat to society.
Who?
SchoolShooting.org is operated by Washington Ceasefire and a group of volunteers. Washington Ceasefire, established in 1983 and with more than 6,000 members today, is Washington state’s leading advocate for safer use and storage of firearms. The website was originally conceived and created by Alex Algard, who took a more active interest in gun related issues after the Virginia Tech massacre.
If you would like to get involved, please start by joining Facebook Page and following us on Twitter. Also, note that this website is run on a limited budget by Washington Ceasefire. We encourage you to show your support, so if you’d like to, please also make a financial donation today, to help us operate and improve SchoolShooting.org. Any amount is very welcome!
