Aplington-Parkersburg head football coach Ed Thomas was shot to death by Mark Becker, a 24-year-old former football player. Becker walked into the school's weight room in the morning and fatally shot his former coach Ed Thomas. Thomas, 58, died at a Waterloo hospital. His shooting stunned the rural community of 1,800 residents 80 miles northeast of Des Moines, and reverberated through NFL circles, where he was remembered as much for his faith as his winning record. Thomas had coached for 34 years and produced 200 wins and 4 NFL players. One of the them, Brad Meester of the Jaguars, said: “He treated each and every one of us like we were his kids.
