Shooter

Alvaro Castillo (18, Male), Other

Occurred on Aug 30, 2006

Mental illness

Castillo killed his father and then around lunchtime drove to Orange High School, his alma mater. The 2005 Orange High graduate opened fire with a rifle and sawed-off shotgun. A bullet grazed one student's shoulder, and broken glass fell on another, but neither required hospitalization. Investigators learned after Castillo's arrest that he had an obsession with the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in which two Colorado students walked through school, killing 13 before killing themselves. Hours before going to Orange High, Castillo sent e-mail to the Columbine principal to tell him of his plans for a similar attack in North Carolina. Learn More (newsobserver.com)
