Shooting at Seven Lakes High School

Victims

Shooter

Michael Priest (17, Male), Student, Fatality (Suicide)

Occurred on Oct 17, 2006

A 17-year-old student shot himself in the courtyard of the high school during the lunch hour. Early reports erroneously indicated that it may have been an accidental shooting, not a suicide. A spokesman for the Katy Independent School District says the boy went to a secluded area adjacent to the cafeteria courtyard before shooting himself with a handgun. Learn More (click2houston.com)

he was suppose to be in my class, he never showed up, he was in my first hour class and was fine, but he never showed up to my fifth hour, then they put us on lock down, they wouldn't tell us what was going on, we had to turn on cnn in our classroom tv to see what was happening, other highschools found out before us, there was like 10 cop cars, 2 ambulances, 3 firetrucks, and one life flight helicopter along with new helticopters, it was very scary, our class had to have counseling, becasue we were close to where it happened they made us shut our mini blinds on our two big glass windows, and then they made us stay in our room, schools around us were also put down on lock down, very scary situation to be in believe me.

I was in the football lockerroom during the whole deal. I was a Junior. and they locked us down and gave us no info for a full hour at least. I actually have a bunch of recordings different people's views of that day. It was just a really weird day, and I hopefully won't be involved in another one. Just knowing that Coach Vara, our athletic trainer, attempted to save makes me feel sorry for Coach and the kid. One that Coach had to see this and deal with it, and that this kid had to be in so much pain. Watching teachers pour sand on the ground to cover the blood was strange...

O yeah, and his name was Michael Priest

It happened 4 years ago today. I was in the classroom with the window that he did it outside of. I was sitting right next to it. Not a day goes by that I don't think of all the things I saw that day. My life has never been the same. I really think he was trying to send a message taking his life at our school... he could have done it anywhere, but he did it outside our classroom. He was alone. No one even knew who he was. His picture wasn't in any of the year books.

Just knowing someone's name makes the biggest difference in the world. Suicide is the most preventable form of death, but the third leading killer in America. He taught me all that and importance of loving others and of taking advantage of every moment. Its a bittersweet lesson. I hope no one else has to learn it that way, but its such an important lesson to learn: the value of EVERY SINGLE human life.

Seven Lakes High School hasn't learned anything from this tragedy. Even today soccer moms roam the halls dictating the social order, terrible rumors are spread like wildfire, good students are ostracized for no reason, the reward system is corrupt, and the full-of-herself principal doesn't care.

Poor Michael Priest sought to expose the ugly side of Seven Lakes that hides behind our fancy marquee; sadly, his sacrifice was in vain.

The state needs to investigate this school, and policy/personnel changes need to be made, before another suicide occurs.

I have to agree with Cindy. SLHS has not done anything to teach us a lesson from this tragedy. It's been years and no one is allowed to speak of what happened. I wish SLHS would help us prevent this from happening again Instead of avoiding the situation.

i was in the hallway on my way to the bathroom. my spanish class was down the hallway from the door where he killed himself. i had just came from the bathroom and saw the commotion. i saw everything and it haunts me still to this day. i ran to the bathroom to high where i got text messages from family who live 3 states away. the most pathetic this about the entire ordeal was that we had took the TAKS test the very next day and the leaders of our school completely acted as though nothing had happened. we never even had a seminar about it. even worse, the kid showed signs of depression all over his myspace page and no one did anything about it. his name was never even released to the public. maybe the school district should stop worrying about being this perfect model for society and focus of the welfare of its students. i realize this message comes very late, but it is never too late to bring light to a situation that should have never happened.
