Eric Hainstock, 15, a ninth-grader at the school, entered the main entrance of the school with a .22 revolver and a 20-gauge shotgun, both owned by his parents. Hainstock fatally wounded John Klang, the high school principal. However Klang did manage to wrestle Hainstock to the ground and subdue him until others helped. It is reported that the suspect was angry after receiving a disciplinary warning from the principal the day before for having tobacco on school grounds and with teachers who hadn't stopped a group of kids from calling him names.
